You all know I’ve been attempting to homeschool, and while we’ve been slow to start, one thing we’ve been doing that’s been a crowd-pleaser for all of us (not just my toddler, but also my 5 year old) has been toddler journals.
I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how it would go at first. After all toddlers aren’t exactly known for their ability to sit down and follow instructions for long, nor am I all that good at coming up with activity ideas. But, surprisingly, learning journals have turned out to be one of the most enjoyable activities in our homeschooling routine!

What is a Learning Journal?
A learning journal is a blank sketchbook where you can customize activities for your child, focusing on different developmental skills.
Here’s why we’ve loved them:
Fine motor skills
Holding crayons, markers, and pencils has been fantastic for building those small hand muscles needed for writing and drawing. Even though we’re not writing full sentences with our little one yet, through journals we’re laying the groundwork for later writing skills.
Critical thinking
Laying out drawings and activities for your children encourages them to think critically as they plan on how to engage problem-solving skills and learn to think creatively about how to get to the answer. It strengthens their ability to analyze situations, make thoughtful choices, and refine their ideas.
Bonding Time
I’ve found that our journaling sessions are a time to sit down together and connect. I get to work on these alongside them. It’s low-pressure, creative and relaxed, and we end up having some really sweet moments of interaction.
