How to Make a Vision Board

I’ve written before about my experiences with manifestation. The concept of manifesting–attracting positive things into your life by visualizing and meditating on them–can seem a little odd or uncomfortable at first. However, simple manifestation techniques can help center your brain on your true desires and goals. As a visual person and a photographer, one of my favorite manifestation techniques is creating vision boards. This post will teach you how to make a vision board in just four easy steps.

1. Reflect on your goals and desires.

One mistake people often make when constructing a vision board is starting with the image search. This can lead to a vision board that is a little aimless or focused on surface level desires. Before you make your board, spend time reflecting on what your true hopes are for an upcoming year. You can ask yourself:

  • When I picture my ideal life, what does it look like?
  • If I could only change one thing in my life this year, what would it be?
  • What brings me joy in my life? How could I do more of that this year?
  • Who do I admire? What aspects of their life do I admire?

If you practice meditation, you can reflect on the thoughts and ideas that come out of your meditation sessions. The most important part of this step is being truly honest with yourself and thinking critically about your goals.

2. Choose images with discretion.

As soon as you google “How to Make a Vision Board,” you’ll be hit with a million pictures of photo collages and Pinterest boards that can seem a little daunting. As tempting as it is to make a vision board like an art piece, it’s not all about aesthetics.

The majority of us will make a vision board using an image search engine like Pinterest or Google Images. This means you need to be mindful about the search terms you enter. For example, say your goal for 2023 is to start your own business. Look at the difference between searching “starting a business” and “personal power”.

Remember that your vision board isn’t an instruction manual, it’s inspiration. While the first pin might be a helpful resource (definitely save it for later!), the goal of your vision board is to guide your thinking with one look. The simple quote is straightforward, meaningful, and speaks to your true desires for the new year.

3. Construct with intention.

Whether you’re creating a digital or physical vision board, be intentional as you’re putting it together. Think about what images are given priority on the board itself. Those are naturally the images that will receive your focus and attention throughout the year!

When building your vision board, start by setting your most valuable images to the side. You’ll place those last so that they are on the top layer of your collage or the top row of your digital vision board. Your board should be something that you want to look at every day, so take your time and enjoy the process.

4. Place in a meaningful location.

Your fully realized vision board should have an important place in your home. I place mine in my bathroom where I get ready each morning. This ensures that I start each day with my mind focused on my goals. If you created a digital vision board, you can set it as your phone background or set it to automatically open when you turn on your computer.

Always remember that you deserve to have your dreams come true! Every new year is a chance to put your mind, heart, and energy into making those dreams a reality.
