Guide to At-Home Fitness

Regular exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your mental and physical health. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise can combat multiple health conditions, improve mood, promote better sleep, and helps you be more social. However, with two little kids, getting to a gym every day is basically an impossible goal for me. I love exercising at home because I can fit it in during nap time or after the kids go to bed. For me, getting started in at-home fitness was all about making a plan and having the right equipment on hand at all times. This is my guide to at-home fitness!

Creating an At-Home Fitness Schedule

If you’re anything like me, the word “schedule” is a little scary. When I first thought about creating an at-home fitness schedule, I immediately thought “oh, this is something I’ll never stick to!” So when I talk about a fitness schedule, I mean a list of the exercises I want to do each week. I can arrange the exercises in any way I like based on the time I have and how I feel each day. Here’s what my at-home fitness schedule looks like:

  1. 120 minutes of walking or jogging.
    • I split this across multiple days.
  2. Calisthenic Exercises at least two days a week.
    • Calisthenics include exercises that mimic the natural movements of the body like squats, pushups, crunches, and jump rope.
  3. 30 minutes of leg exercises.
    • Squats, Lunges, Wall Sits, Calf Raises.
  4. 30 minutes of arm exercises.
    • Planks, Bicep Curls,
  5. 30-60 minutes of yoga or stretching.

This is not a weekly exercise schedule that will turn you into a body builder or a fitness influencer! This at-home fitness schedule works for me because it keeps my body mobile, healthy, and happy.

My Favorite At-Home Fitness Equipment

My main rules about buying at-home fitness equipment are don’t buy anything you won’t use, make sure everything can be put away when not in use, don’t spend more money than you have to. Keeping those three simple rules in mind, here is some of my favorite at-home fitness equipment. The full list is available on my Amazon storefront when you’re ready to shop!

Forzueby Adjustable Dumbbell Sets

These dumbbells are amazing because you can add attachments to each end to add weight. I love this solution because I don’t have to own a million different weighted dumbbells, I can just keep this set in a closet or drawer.

Retrospec Solana Yoga Mat

Even if you’re not doing yoga regularly, it’s great to have a yoga mat for at-home fitness. We have wood floors, so I do the majority of my exercises and stretching on this mat to avoid slipping.

Foldable Walking Pad

I love having a walking pad in my home as it starts to get cooler outside. This walking pad folds in half so it can be stored in a closet or under a bed quickly and easily. It’s a great solution for people like me who don’t want to fill their home with exercise equipment. Since everyone’s needs are a little different, I’ve added multiple walking pads to my Amazon storefront so you can find the best fit for you!

Polygon Resistance Band Set

Resistance bands are great for building strength across your whole body and especially wonderful for physical therapy or rehab following an injury. This set is durable and has a great range of flexibility for different strength levels.

Remember the most important part of starting at at-home fitness routine is feeling healthy, happy, and mobile! Customize your routine and equipment to prioritize the most important things for you to feel good. Shorten exercises to fit your schedule, walk on your walking pad during work, jump rope to feel like a kid again! Whatever makes you feel good is the right at-home fitness routine for you!
