Moving is never easy, especially when it involves leaving behind everything you’ve known. My family and I made the life-changing decision to move from Ontario to Nova Scotia a few years back, and it has proven to be one of the best choices we’ve ever made. From a faster-paced lifestyle to more family time, the transition has brought us a wealth of positive changes. If you’re considering making a similar move, here are five reasons why moving from Ontario to Nova Scotia was the best decision for my husband, our two young daughters, and me.

1. A Slower Pace of Life That Brings Us Closer Together
One of the biggest adjustments we’ve noticed since relocating to Nova Scotia is the slower, more relaxed pace of life. In Ontario, it often felt like we were constantly rushing to get from one place to another. The traffic, the hectic work schedules, and the pressure to “keep up with the Joneses” was stressful. In contrast, Nova Scotia has allowed us to embrace a more peaceful existence. With less congestion and a friendlier, laid-back atmosphere, we’ve been able to spend more quality time as a family. Our days feel longer (in a good way), and we’ve found a renewed sense of connection with each other, whether it’s exploring the outdoors or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home.
2. The Incredible Natural Beauty and Outdoor Adventures
Nova Scotia’s natural beauty is absolutely breathtaking, and it has opened up a whole new world of outdoor adventures for us. From rugged coastlines and sandy beaches (Crystal Cresent Beach and Martinique beach are two of my faves) to the hills of Cape Breton, there’s no shortage of places to explore. Our daughters are able to enjoy activities like hiking, kayaking, and swimming in the ocean —all without the crowds we had become accustomed to in Ontario. Whether it’s visiting the Cabot Trail or taking weekend trips to one of the province’s many parks, we’ve been able to reconnect with nature and foster a love for the outdoors in our children that we hadn’t anticipated.
3. The Strong Sense of Community
I was always confused to the saying that Canada is so polite, I never really found that to be true… until I moved here. Nova Scotia has a much smaller population compared to Ontario, which has helped foster a strong sense of community. We immediately felt welcomed by our new neighbours, and there’s an undeniable spirit of kindness and camaraderie in the air. People here genuinely look out for each other, and this has made a huge difference in our experience. From playdates for our daughters to local gatherings and events, we’ve found that it’s easier to form meaningful connections. The sense of belonging in our new community has made the transition feel less like a move and more like coming home.
4. A Focus on Family-Friendly Values
In Ontario, life often revolved around balancing work, school, and extracurricular activities. While these things are important, Nova Scotia has allowed us to rediscover the importance of family-focused values. The pace of life here gives us more time to prioritize what truly matters: spending time together as a family, being present for our children, and building traditions. Whether it’s attending local festivals, enjoying a Sunday afternoon at a nearby park, or cooking a meal together, our lifestyle in Nova Scotia encourages us to slow down and savour the moments with our kids.
5. Building Our Dream Home
One of the most exciting aspects of our move to Nova Scotia has been the ability to build our dream home and have the space we’ve always wanted. In Ontario, owning a home with land was something we could never afford due to skyrocketing property prices. But in Nova Scotia, we were able to purchase a beautiful plot of land, design our perfect home, and have room for our daughters to run, play, and explore. The extra space has made a world of difference in how we live our lives—whether it’s tending to a garden, enjoying family BBQs, or just staring out across the lake. Our new home has truly become a sanctuary, and we feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to create the life we envisioned for our family.

Moving from Ontario to Nova Scotia has enriched our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined. The slower pace, breathtaking nature, strong community bonds, family-first values, and the opportunity to build our dream home on acres of land have given us a fresh start—one filled with excitement and fulfillment. While any move comes with its challenges, this change has been the best decision we’ve made as a family, and we’re looking forward to many more years of adventure in our beautiful new home. If you’re considering making a move for yourself and your family, Nova Scotia might just be the place that feels like home.
