Sustainable Fashion

Hello Loves,

One of my 2017 resolutions was to decrease my carbon footprint, mainly due to my support of sustainable fashion and the fight against fast fashion. However, I must admit I still find myself a victim of the high street calling. Although I have made leaps and bounds in the accessory portion of my closet, investing in higher end labels that will hopefully be passed down through generations, I still struggle to convert the clothing section.

Maybe it’s because I am still a two year old that spills everything I eat and drink on myself, or maybe it’s that things on the high street are accessible and so gosh darn cute… I just can’t bring myself to put my hand DEEP inside my pocket to buy a tank top for $90.

It’s a difficult topic, but there are ways to remain sustainable without selling your liver for a vest.

  • Buy Vintage

I am a sucker for a good vintage find. Fashion always goes in circles, what was stylish will most definitely be stylish again… apart from Ed Hardy, let’s not relive that travesty.

  • Shop Eco

Shop at local Eco and ethically friendly retailers, such as People Tree and Eileen Fisher.

  • Don’t Follow Trends

Trends are the worst, and boy have I been victim of them. You end up buying items to wear for a quick second before they are ‘oh so last week’. If you must join try recycling and DIY.

  • Know Your Fabrics

Polyester and other synthetic fabrics can take thousands of years to decompose, clogging our landfills. Opt for natural materials such as cotton, wool, and silk.

  • If You Must, Be Picky

Now if you must shop the H&M and Zara’s of the world… be picky. Buy pieces that are timeless and will remain part of your outfit rotations for years to come (such as my pink coat below from Forever 21)

Becoming sustainable can be hard, but doable. Just by shopping less often and spending a little more than you would, the few times you do will not only save you big bucks, but also our planet from some disastrous consequences.

I can totally relate to this post, as I want to be more ethical when it comes to fashion, but the high street is so darn tempting! You look lovely, I especially like your coat

I totally agree with you! Its about buying quality over quantity, knowing the right pieces that will hold their personal and monetary value over time and still finding something with character that you will not get bored of easily. Wonderful look as always and I want your pink coat!

I love this post, as this is one of my New Year Resolutions too! I know I won’t be able to avoid the High Street completely, but it’s a great tip to buy timeless pieces and I am also trying to recycle mine! I recently wore a skirt from Forever 21, but as I have had it over six years, it seems reasonable!
I love this pink coat on you!

I’ve been focusing on building a more sustainable wardrobe lately. I’ve become extremely picky when it comes to shopping and really ask myself several times if I need an item before I buy it. It’s such a better way to approach shopping and really makes it easier to style the pieces you have in your wardrobe!

I LOVED this post. So often we don’t think about the impact our love for shopping has on the environment. Thanks for sharing this post and the reminder that we should all be a little more sustainable and conscious when it comes to our closet.
